FAQ

Q

Do you offer samples of your wallpaper?

A

Yes! We offer standard size (8.5” x 11”) samples of all of our wallpapers. We recommend buying a sample before placing your final order to make sure the color scheme and pattern scale work for your space. Please keep in mind that our sample size cannot allow for full representation of the pattern. If you would like to have a full repeat of a wallpaper, please select “Wallpaper Sheet” at check out.

Samples for Crappy Magic and Above Below wallpapers are more expensive because they are larger than our standard samples and are printed on Type II substrates.

Q

What type of material is the wallpaper?

A

The majority of our wallpapers are screen printed or digitally printed on clay coated paper made in the USA, which is washable, fade-resistant and Class A, ASTM E84-98 fire rated.

Our custom fit murals are printed on heavier weight (Type II) substrates. Crappy Magic wallpaper is digitally printed on a matte finish, 20 oz vinyl, while Above Below wallpaper is hand painted and printed on Nolar, an eco-friendly Type II equivalent substrate made in the USA. Nolar is PVC-free, recyclable, breathable, and FSC certified.

Q

How much wallpaper should I order?

A

The simplest way to estimate the amount of wallpaper you will need is to calculate the area in square feet of the wall(s) you want to cover. Wall Area = Height x Width (do not include moldings, baseboards, doors or windows in your measurements). New Hat sells wallpaper in double rolls, which are 27 inches wide by 10 yards long and come to approximately 65 square feet. We encourage second guessers and overachievers to follow the instructions in our Wallpaper Calculator for an exact estimate.

It is always best to round up when ordering wallpaper rolls in the event that any paper is damaged during installation, or in case of future repairs.

Q

How do I install my wallpaper?

A

We recommend that wallpaper be installed by a professional paper hanger to achieve the best results. To find a professional paper hanger in the United States, visit the Wallcovering Installers Association website. The WIA provides a directory of experienced installers listed by city or area code.

If you feel comfortable hanging wallpaper yourself, please consult our Hanging Guide.

Q

What is the meaning of “variable” pattern match for Blue Nile wallpaper?

A

Blue Nile is unique because it is a modular pattern with a border along one side. These characteristics allow for wallpaper strips to be hung in different directions and combinations along the wall. Check out our Blue Nile Installation Guide for illustrations of possible pattern match-ups.

Q

How do I care for my wallpaper?

A

Dirt and light scuffs can be removed from our wallpapers using a a mild soap that does not contain detergent with a cloth or sponge dampened with clean water. Do not use abrasive cleaning products on your wallpaper. Stains caused by grease and oil may not be removable.

Q

How do I begin this process?
